Cricket Explained to a Foreigner

It occurred to me that we have a number of people going to the Nationals down south, who may run into foreigners who wonder what cricket is about.

The same may apply to some of our members who have visitors over the festive season, or who may be visiting overseas, especially USA.

I found a simple explanation of cricket amongst some of my late father's memorabilia & it is below for your edification, or otherwise.  (Don't blame me, it's a stupid game anyway!)

Cricket: As explained to a foreigner

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in which tries to get those in, out.

Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in, and the next man goes in until he's out.

When they are all out, the side that's out comes in, and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in, and the next man in goes out and goes in.

There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out.

When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game

Todays game was at Gordonvale Golf Club with 73 starters consisting of 56 men & 17 ladies with 2 new members, Kevin Mead and Catheryn Buder both from Gordonvale GC with todays sponsor being the FNQVGA.

The course was in great shape due to the hard work of Rob and Mike, in particular their efforts to return the greens to great shape after some clowns had spread Roundup on a few of the greens a couple of weeks ago. Thanks also to Belinda for not only providing bar services and the preparation of sandwiches but also for ensuring that the aircons were working after the game, greatly appreciated by all.

There is to be a Cancer Charity Game at Gordonvale GC on Wednesday 24th, all welcome with the timesheet available at the club.

Members were given a heads up for the AGM to be held at Gordonvale on the 27 Nov 18 at 0800 to be followed by a 4BBB shotgun start immediately after the AGM (0830).

Next Game Gordonvale 23 Oct

All,

Our next game is a single stableford at Gordonvale.

This is the final round in the Ted Thomasson trophy for the year.

The course is in great condition with plenty of run, which will help the shorter hitters make the drains with their second!

Belinda will be looking after you, so there should be no problems with being overcharged for a cart.  Anyone who was overcharged in error last time we played there should mention it to Bel, as I've been advised by club President Anthony you will be refunded the difference.

See you there.

President's Report & Results Cairns 9 Oct

Hi All,

Today was Greg Gibbs final day and final speech as President, he was very sincere about thanking committee members individually for their efforts over the previous 12 months stating that without their dedication the FNQVGA would not run as smooth as it does. Greg also paid tribute to Claud Clark our Patron along with all sponsors that support us throughout the year. Greg completed his very exhaustive speech in such an emotional manner that Andrina was required to supply the box of Kleenex to get him over the line.

Many thanks to Greg Gibbs for his jocular attitude over the previous 12 months as President and the committee and members wished him well and nothing but the best for the future for Greg and his family and their move back to NSW.

Todays game was at CGC with 92 starters consisting of 75 men & 17 ladies with 3 new members;
Peter Walters: Gordonvale, Mike George: Yappoon and Ernest Bingham from North Johnstone.

Next Game Cairns 9 Oct

All,

Our next game is a relaxing single stableford at Cairns golf club.

The course looks in good condition & I'm sure the greens will be as slick as usual.

Our sponsor for the day is Cazalys AFL.

This will be President Greg's last event before he moves to NSW, where he will be able to wear his State of Origin blues with less comment than he gets here.  No doubt he will have plenty to say, probably even more than at Mareeba, so do come & express your appreciation for his efforts & advice on rules of golf over the years.

See you there.

President's Report & Results Mareeba 2 Oct

Hi All,

The game today at Mareeba was played on a course that was prepared today by Ron Cade and Michael and presented in an extremely good condition. The holes were cut in some “interesting” places. Some of which the majority of us had not seen before. However it was the same for all.

We had a relatively small field of 77 today, comprising 62 men and 15 ladies. The event which was the final one for the Association’s Consistency Trophy, was sponsored by BROTHERS LEAGUES CLUB. Supporting our sponsors is essential if we are to keep our fees at a level that encourages the older golfers to keep playing this great game. So if your looking for a night out try a visit to Brothers.

We had one new member join today, and we welcome Ken Berriman formerly of Wauchope and Howlong and now, after resisting a number of overtures of Cairns members, is a member of H.M.B. A very wise choice.

We are approaching that time of the year when we encourage members to participate in the management of our Association by putting their names forward to serve on the Committee. When we conducted the survey last year, about 8 -10 members indicated they were interested in becoming part of the administration of sport. We usually only have four to five formal meetings a year, with several “email” meetings if required. Game day is obviously when the biggest effort is required but most of our Committee multitask and there is always someone there to help out if needed. If you think you are prepared to help out, please speak to any of the present or past Committee members and they will give you any information they can.

The game next week is at Cairns and I expect the course to be in very good condition. That will be my last game before leaving to live in N.S.W. so to those who won’t be able to make it there, thanks for your friendship over the years, allowing me to serve on the Committee in various roles and mainly the enjoyment of your company.

Yours in golf,
Greg.
“El Presidente”.
