The Half Moon Bay Golf course had had over 70mm of rain in the 24 hours to 6am this morning when the FNQVGA decided to change its competition set down for today from a 2Ball Ambrose to an individual stableford on the dry Gray Course. And what a good move it was. 51 players (45men and 6 ladies ) flexed their muscles on this shorter course and no fewer than 6 players recorded 40 stableford points, including GD who was only defeated by the Australian Count-back System for the Mens Div 1 prize.
Thanks to everyone at Yorkeys for accommodating us so ably, and especially the Green Staff for the excellent condition of a well watered course, especially the uniform greens.
We had one new member this morning Greg Dujan from Half Moon Bay.

While on the subject of exceptional, local candidate for State of Origin GOAT Greg Dowling, in on fast track to become the GVOAT (Greatest Veteran Golfer of All Time). Not has he won all but one of the Summer of Golf series on the Tablelands , the other one he was an absentee, he has won both opening rounds of FNQVGA 2026 with another 40 stableford points today. He won with 42 points the last time we were in Gordonvale last year. His handicap surely is heading towards single figures.

A great field of 56 players (48men and 8 ladies) was on hand at Mareeba Golf Club as hostilities resumed this morning in the 2026 FNQVGA weekly competitions. Thanks to the Mareeba Golf Club and especially the versatile Brian behind the bar/buggy shed and Club President Kirra for getting the field away.
All the 2026 Management Committee were on hand today to help out at the start of a new year. however we are still on the lookout for a Vice Captain. If you are interested make yourself known .
The course is looking very tropical at the moment; very lush rough to trap any wayward shots- the fairway was always the best place to be. Thanks to Karl, Jim, Rod Bernie and all the other volunteers.
We had two new members today Curly Larkin from Atherton and Peter Linnehan from Half Moon Bay. Welcome aboard. Members are encouraged to promote our Association as much as possible at their home clubs.

Due to the continuation of inclement weather the Summer of Golf set down for ATHERTON Golf Club tomorrow has been cancelled.
Go and see a movie instead - I can recommend "The Choral" starring Ralph Fiennes, Roger Allam and Alun Armstrong. And its cheaper on Tuesdays, apparently.
Ross was a member for many years and won our Consistency Trophy in 2015. He played golf all over the world including The Old Course St Andrews and Pebble Beach and had great stories to tell of each. Ross was a quiet, likeable gentleman and always much in demand as a mixed four-ball partner. Who could ever forget his characteristic start to his backswing, where he kept in contact with the ground for as long as he could!
Ross turned 80 on 28th November 2025.
RIP Ross White 28.11.1945 - 04.01.2025
