TUESDAY 24TH SEPTEMBER

33 players, consisting of 30 male and 5 ladies made their way up the mountain to the Millaa Millaa GC to play the final round of the Patrons Trophy yesterday Tuesday 24th September. Sponsored by the FNQ VGA. We were met by Marg who supplied tea, coffee & toast which was greatly appreciated and also Don who organised the course and the carts.  Always a pleasure to travel to Millaa Millaa.

The day started off overcast but cleared to a sunny warm day, the course was in great condition although the greens were a bit challenging.  But if anybody had seen these greens about a month ago after having been knocked about during the prolonged wet and to see the improvement is quite remarkable.  We commend the volunteers at Millaa Millaa GC.

Scores on the whole were quite good for the day with our new member from Ravenshoe GC Reg Dwyer carding a very nice round on a countback to local Ross Ellen. Both had 38 points so obviously they were reading the greens without much problem.

Edna Atkinson took out the ladies from Ali Gibson.

HALF MOON BAY RESULTS TUESDAY 17TH SEPTEMBER

It is often said that we live in the Wet Tropics and without a shadow of a doubt 2024 has truly lived up to that title. Today at Half Moon Bay GC in the middle of September, the rain just kept coming!

FNQ Vet members are to be commended for their perseverance as in conditions that are synonymous with ducks,  57 players consisting of 49 men and 8 ladies took to the course.  Apart from the bunkers being out of play the course was in really good condition, which is a credit to the Club and the greens staff. We would like to thank Brady and Mike for getting us out on the course and ready to play despite a few hiccups due to tech issues.

Today we welcomed three visitors - Ernie Lesley and John & Clare Sorensen from Levin on New Zealand's North Island. Also George Van Merch  from South Africa and David Hayne from Southern Golf Club in Victoria. It just goes to show that our visiting international golfers won't be put off by a bit of inclement weather.  We also had one new member Paul Duffell from Half Moon Bay GC.

Today we played a Single Stableford which was the last round of the Consistency Series.  We would like to thank our fantastic sponsors Brothers Leagues Club for their valued support once again. We encourage our members to visit Brothers at every opportunity for a great dining and entertainment experience.

ATHERTON RESULTS TUESDAY 10 SEPTEMBER

Not sure if its the roadworks on the range roads to the Tablelands, which are under constant Stop n Go, but our roll up to Atherton GC yesterday was rather disappointing with a total field of only 35 men and 6 ladies.

However those who made the journey enjoyed a beautiful mild day on a golf course that was in tip top condition.  Brendan Clark (greenkeeper) and his volunteers are to be commended for the preparation of the greens which one would need to travel far afield to find better putting surfaces. Thanks also to ever-ready bunny Irish and Cheryl who were there to greet us, get us underway and to provide their usual welcoming hospitality.

On the subject of the Atherton GC, nominations for the FNQ Golf Senior Open next week on the 18th & 19th September are still open.  Contact the Club on 4091 1283.

Today we played a Single Stableford, sponsored by Darren and his team at Drummond Cairns for the second last round of the Consistency Trophy. Please be sure to visit the store for all your golfing needs.

We had one member re-join which brings our numbers to 178 members which is on par with last year.  Welcome back Brian Brown. Hopefully with 11 games left to play, we can throw the cast net and get a few more members by year's end.

Today's winner was Bert Smith,  which makes this a special achievement given that Bert turns 90 years of age this coming Thursday. He should be an inspiration to us all, I will certainly be happy to be playing golf, let alone winning comps when I hit 90! Happy Birthday Bert for Thursday from all the Vets.

Queensland Government Grant Acknowledgement

The Queensland Government provided $2,500 to the Far North Queensland Veteran Golfers Association (FNQVGA) to purchase a laptop computer and MiScore system to enable Queenslanders to participate in sport and recreation activities.

The FNQVGA wishes to thank the Queensland Government and the Department of Sport & Recreation for this grant.  It will enable our Association to accurately record and register scoring systems for our weekly golfing competitions in a timely manner.  And importantly supports our volunteers and playing members to save a great deal of time and add to their enjoyment of the sport.

BABINDA RESULTS TUESDAY 3 SEPTEMBER

We arrived early to Babinda GC and were quickly served fresh bun loaf with tea & coffee to prepare us for our round.  And the hospitality just kept on coming with a wonderful lunch of home cooked corned beef on bakery bread sandwiches with refreshments.  A big thank you to Patsy, Bernadette, Lorraine, Addi and Gabrielle and the team for always taking such good care of FNQ Vets when we travel down to their Club.

On the subject of thanks, Dave the Greenskeeper along with Paul, Chris and John had the course looking fantastic and in prime condition after such a long tedious wet and was a pleasure to play in such sublime sunny conditions.

As mentioned in the earlier Blog, Babinda GC is a very challenging little course as a few of our new members found out, with the strategically placed "can't see" drains crisscrossing the fairways, it really makes it a thinkers course. One of the drains almost claimed a casualty with one of our members Di, as she tried to retrieve her ball and got sucked into the mud down to her knees and had to be snigged out! Hospitality was again shown by the Club when they cleaned Di up - and her shoes - and gave her a spare set to complete the round. You just don't get that anywhere and that's the reason we love to support these small country clubs.

Tuesday we played a Single Stableford for the 2nd Round of the Patrons Trophy which was sponsored by our valued sponsor Cazalys Cairns. We had 48 players - 36 Men and 12 Ladies.
