President's Report

The recent continuing wet seems to have weighed on everyone, as the last couple of days clear weather saw us achieve our best field for the season so far – 102 men & 21 ladies.

The course was well prepared and the greens largely recovered from recent scarification. Well done to the greens staff. Thanks also to Greg Ferry & the caterers who looked after us well as usual.

We were pleased to have Sara Cook representing our sponsor for the day, Sportsworld, attend the presentations & talk about what they could offer our members. Unfortunately she did not play, but is available to discuss individual programs with members interested in increasing fitness or suppleness.

Welcome to five visitors, Les Cawthorne of Charlestown, NSW, Marty & Chris Harris of Yamba, NSW, Carol Reynolds of Windsor Park, Florida, USA & Warren Walters of Arkansaw, USA.

Welcome back to Gordon Thomas, fresh from a long cruise. He arrived back in the nick of time, as Claud Clark, who was standing in as Treasurer for Col, also has to take off on family business down south, so Gordon was promptly collared to fill in for the fill in! Still, he had a great cruise from all accounts.

On a more serious note ladies & gentlemen, we have enjoyed quite a lengthy period of games which are as well organised as any in other clubs I've been associated with. However, that can only continue if we have fresh faces coming forward to serve on the committee, as it is unfair to expect existing members to serve for an indefinate period. We also would like, one day, to be able just to roll up, pay our fees & tee off with whom we like when we feel like it, or just roll over & go back to sleep, as the case may be!

This year, the position of Vice President was not filled as no-one expressed any interest. Whilst not critical this year, it will become so if not filled at our AGM in December, as it will affect any succession plan.

Please give some thought to taking a position on our management committee. It is not onerous if there are sufficient on it to enable stand ins for those on holiday, sick or busy with family affairs.  If you would like to talk about what is involved before throwing your hat in the ring, please see me or any committee member anytime.

The winner of our latest raffle was John Everall & the runner up Max Crittenden.  Well done both.

Our next game is at Mareeba golf club on 5th June.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Next Game Half Moon Bay 29th May

All,

Our next game is at Half Moon Bay Golf Club & the course will be fully open after all the rain, assuming there is no more!

They are expecting us, so we will have our usual good range of food to sustain us through the day & after.

The sponsor for the day is Sportsworld who will no doubt have some interesting brochures available as well as other promotional material.

See you there.

President's Report & Results for 21st May at Mossman Golf Club

President's Report &
Results of the Single Stableford Competition
Played on 21st May 2012
at Mossman Golf Club
65 Players

President's Report

There was a disappointing field of only 65 players, 56 men & 9 ladies.  This was probably the result of the dismal weather over the last couple of days, but as it turned out Mossman didn't have any rain on the day & those who didn't turn up missed a very pleasant, clear day with a cool breeze & a very well presented course.

The little rain Mossman received over the previous couple of days only served to keep the fairways green & the greens in excellent condition. In fact, the greens were better than those at any of the Cairns clubs. Congratulations to the greens staff.

Thanks to the club for sponsoring the event & for Lisa, Dixi & Trish for preparing the sandwiches & looking after us well. Thanks also to Claud Clark for devotion to duty by turning up & doing the Treasurer's job, despite not being able to play after waking with a cricked neck.

Welcome to a visitor from Tin Can Bay, Peter Liddle. He will have found the lack of sand flies compared to his home club a welcome relief, although that did not help him get amongst the prizes.

Commiserations to Harvey Blanch who declared himself a lady in order to get his name on the nearest the pin on 13 only to be knocked off by a real lady, Pris Freeman.

By the way, I forgot to mention in the last blog that the raffle winner last week was June Willmot & runner up Russ Gill – again. However, as the balls were drawn by third parties, we don't believe there was any collusion!

Our next game is at Half Moon Bay golf club on 29th May.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Next Game Mossman Golf Club 22nd May

All,

Next Tuesday's game is at Mossman golf club who are also sponsors for the day.

I'm advised the course has had just enough rain to keep everything green - rather an ominous report considering the amount of time I spend off the fairway!  All greens are also now in play.

We are always looked after well when we go there & as the club has a big competition on the Monday, the course should be in great condition for us.

See you there.

President's Report & Results 15th May Gordonvale Golf Club

President's Report &
Results of the Single Stableford Competition
Played on 15th May 2012
at Gordonvale Golf Club
113 Players

President's Report

A lovely bright day with a pleasant cool breeze tempted out 91 men & 22 ladies to Gordonvale golf club. We were also pleased that Katrin Nash from Drummond golf was able to take time off to come out & have a game.

The course was in good condition, with preparations underway for the club's Autobarn Open being held at the weekend. Drains still had water in them in places, but the weeds on the banks had been sprayed & rough cut to a reasonable length, so less time was spent looking for balls. The greens have received several treatments and were starting to come good again.

Thanks to club Captain Trevor for arranging a drinks cart & for Kim assisting him. It was unfortunate that it received little patronage, probably because of the cooler weather, so it will not be reappearing until next summer. Thanks also to Lionel & Kim for preparing the sandwiches which went down well & to Emily for keeping up with bar requests.

Many thanks to Allan Christensen Physiotherapy for sponsoring the game. Allan Christensen unfortunately was unable to play but attended to present the trophies after saying a few words about what he offered. We have some cards available for those who want to discuss a program with him.

Welcome to new members Masa Kato & John Sinclair of Half Moon Bay, who bring our membership for the year to date up to 258.

Our next game is at Mossman golf club on 22nd May, where it will be interesting to see if all greens are back in play.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Next Game Gordonvale 15th May

All,

Our next game is at Gordonvale golf club which has recovered well after the wet.

Weeds in drains have been sprayed & water in them has largely evaporated although there is still some around, mainly in the most awkward spots!  Greens have improved considerably thanks to an ongoing program & I'm told there will be a drinks cart doing the rounds during our game.

The sponsor for the day is Allan Christensen Physiotherapy & we hope to have Allan there to tell you about his practice & so you can talk to him.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Also, we're still having some problems with emails being returned undeliverable, so I'm going to send out a test email to all on our mailing list today.  If you don't receive anything & think you have given us your email address, please email me at lsiedle@gmail.com.

President's Report & Results 8th May Cairns Golf Club

President's Report &
Results of the Single Stableford Competition
Played on 8th May 2012
at Cairns Golf Club
118 Players

President's Report

This was the game swapped with Mareeba because the course was unplayably wet on 17th April, and recent excellent weather resulted in a good turnout of 94 men & 24 ladies.

The course was in good condition with some run returning to the fairways & the bunkers with soft sand in them. Although the greens still had not fully recovered from scarification, they should be back to near perfect in a couple of weeks. Several remarks were made about the amount of work being done on the gardens, which were looking beautiful, particularly to those of us who managed to stay out of them!

Whilst we were there, work started on levelling the site of the new Pro's Shop & clearing was continuing along the road in preparation for the Cairns access road upgrades. It will be interesting to watch developments in the lead-up to our Open in June.

Many thanks to Complete Health & Fitness Solutions for sponsoring the game & to their representative Scott Payne who played & presented the trophies after saying a few words about what they offered. We have some cards available for those who want to discuss a program with them.

Thanks also to the Club caterers who did well in keeping the sandwiches up to the numbers participating & looking after us generally.

Welcome to visitors Ian Watson of Cabramatta, NSW, & Keith Dudgeon of Ashgrove, Brisbane. We hope you enjoyed the game & that we will see you again.

Our next game is at Gordonvale golf club on 15th May, where the greens are responding well to a rehabilitation program. The drains are also drying out, at least in places!

Look forward to seeing you there.

Next Game Cairns Golf Club 8th May

All,

Just a reminder that our next game is at Cairns. (We swapped it with Mareeba when it was drowned out on 17th April.)

The course is in good shape with some run on the fairways for a change. The greens were cut for their medal round last Saturday, so will probably still be pretty slick for us.

Also, if you have not downloaded a copy of the Open application form from the blog, I've sent it as an attachment to an email to all I have emails for. Some of these were returned undeliverable, so if you think you have given us your email but haven't received that notice, please see us at registration.

Look forward to seeing you at Cairns.

President's Report & Results 1st May at Half Moon Bay Golf Club

President's Report &
Results of the Single Stableford Competition
Played on 1st May 2012
at Half Moon Bay Golf Club
110 Players

President's Report

Despite heavy cloud & some rain on the way into the club, the weather cleared to provide a fine day with a pleasant breeze. The course was in good condition, although the greens still had not fully recovered from a coring & scarification. They should be excellent for our next game at the club at the end of the month.

Many thanks to Bendigo Bank for sponsoring the game. The bank has been a good supporter of our organisation so pop in & see them if you are looking at opening an account or changing banks.

The club had new caterers who seemed to be doing a good trade & no complaints were heard – always a good sign!

Welcome back to Lilly & Keith Schirmer from their extended trip around Australia. We look forward to hearing about how they went on the Nullarbor 18, as well as the other 60 plus clubs they played at. Welcome also to visitor Greg Coffey from Atherton who was too young to score in our comp but seemed to enjoy the day & hopefully will join us when he is of age. Our membership stands at 243 for the 2012 year.

Congratulations to June Willmot on winning the first prize in our raffle and Russ Gill for taking out the second prize.

Just a reminder that our next game is at CAIRNS on 8th May, not Mareeba as shown on our program.

Look forward to seeing you there.
