President's Report

Despite a damp start to the day with more rain predicted, 64 men & 17 ladies decided to brave the prediction & turned up at a course in good condition, although the scores show it was not a pushover.

The greens had received a light sanding & been rolled, which made them surprisingly fast considering the few rain showers experienced through the day. Well done the green-staff.

Thanks also to the caterers for looking after us well as usual.

A particular thanks to our sponsor for the day, Bendigo Bank.  The Manager, David Kirk, attended the registration & presentation but unfortunately was unable to play as he had damaged his shoulder the week before.  Next time hopefully David.

Welcome to visitors Russell Spencer of Calliope & John Norris of Mossman.

Congratulations to Captain Greg who made a fine comeback after last week to take out Div 1 by ensuring he had put his handicap on the card & signed it (several times) so there was no potential for disqualification!

Next Game Half Moon Bay 30 Apr

All,

Our game next Tuesday is at Half Moon Bay golf club.

It is a single stableford Consistency round sponsored by Bendigo Bank.

I'm told the greens have been lightly sanded, but are running true, so there should be no surprises except those awaiting the errant shot!

See you there.

President's Report & Results 23 Apr at Atherton

President's Report & Results
of the Single Stableford Competition
Played on 23rd April 2013
at Atherton Golf Club

President's Report

70 men & 14 ladies arrived in Atherton to find a course in great condition complimented by perfect weather. The greens were firm & had some browning, but ran true & quite fast, whilst the light rough had been brought into the fairways a bit more than I recall previously, which slowed down errant balls & tightened the course a bit . Well done the greens staff.

Thanks also to the Owen & Deb for looking after us - the sandwiches were as good as usual.

Welcome to new members Rodney Ingram of Innisfail & Gregory Coffey of Atherton.

Welcome back to Col McDowall from his wine tasting swan down south & to George Kyriazis showing off his fancy shirt & cap from different clubs he played at in Hawaii.

Congratulations to Merv Hains for his Eagle on the 15th.

Commiserations to Captain Greg who had to disqualify himself for not putting his handicap on his card, thereby forfeiting runner up in Div 1 – true honesty!

For those looking for a different game, the club has a 3 ball Ambrose on the 5 May with $4000 of prizes on offer. Cost is $75 per team. Contact the club for details on 4091 1283.

Last week I forgot to advise the results of the 100 club draw (the $2 raffle) at Cairns golf club. Winner was Kay Bergiel & runner-up was Helen Rowe - congratulations.

Next Game Atherton 23 Apr

All,

Our game on Tuesday is at Atherton.

I'm told the course is in good condition & we are expected, so you can look forward to some of  Deb's sangers.

The sponsor for the day is Masters Home Improvements.

See you there.

Louis Siedle

PS The committee met after the Cairns game & put in place some procedures for calling off games for any reason.

The condensed version is that 24 hours notice will be given if games are called off, when that is possible.  If not, then the decision to call off a game will be made after 8am on the day by the committee following consultation with the pro & or club manager.  Should 20 or more players wish to play on after the game has been cancelled, (eg if it is raining & looks like clearing up) a comp will be held & vouchers for 1 division & balls will be given out, but the scores will not count to any of our major trophies like Consistency.

This will provide some guidance for future committees & consistency in decision-making.

President's Report

A beautiful day brought out 94 men & 28 ladies to play our first round of the Ted Thomasson Trophy. The course had dried out well after Saturday & was in good condition with the greens in excellent condition & the gardens looking pretty. Although there was little run & on most holes a bump & run to the green wasn't an option, the scores did not reflect the conditions. Well done to the greenkeepers & gardeners.

Thanks also to the staff for looking after us well as usual.  The clubhouse & car park  improvements were impressive.

Welcome to our visitors, George Brew of Cooktown & Scott Payne of Health & Fitness Solutions, who we thank for sponsoring the day.

Welcome also to new members Michael Tobin of Cairns, Wayne Petrohilos of Paradise Palms, & Matt Lock & Chris Hannam of Babinda. Our membership for the year now stands at 244.

Just a reminder that the Mareeba Open is on 20/21 April. If anyone is interested in playing in that event, contact the club for entry forms on 4092 1528 & to see if there are any spots left.

Our next game is at Atherton on 23 Apr, sponsored by Masters Home Improvements.

Next Game Cairns 16 Apr

All,

Our game on Tuesday is at Cairns golf club where the greens today were in good condition, but the fairways are quite soggy in places & there is no run, so you have to pitch the ball on to the greens in most cases.

If the current weather continues, the fairways should have dried out by Tuesday but the synoptic forecast is for showers & storms over Eastern Qld, although it looks as if the worst of it may be further south. Watch this blog for updates, but at this stage the course is quite playable.

If any of you have not been to Cairns recently, the clubhouse is looking great & the caterers have been doing an excellent job in their new kitchen.

This is a single stableford comp. & the first round of the Ted Thomasson trophy, with the day sponsored by Health & Fitness Solutions.

See you there. Louis Siedle

Mossman Game Cancellation & Savannah Cup Leaders

All,

I apologise for not being at Mossman, but I was empannelled on a jury & could not get away.  Although that trial has finished, I'm on jury duty till 19 April.

Our Vice President informed me that the game was cancelled because of rain, with more coming in according to the forecast, but there have been a number of complaints about this since.  These will be discussed at a committee meeting as soon as possible.

One comment that was made was that we should notify on the blog of cancellations 24 hours prior, but this is not always possible & in the past the decision has been made on the day at registration.

Please watch this space.

Below are the current leaders in our Savannah Cup competition.  The full results will be available at registration as usual.

All,

Our game on Tuesday is at Mossman, sponsored by Norm Lockwood.  It is a single stableford Consistency event.

President's Report & Results 2 Apr at Mareeba

President's Report & Results
of the Single Stableford Competition
Played on 2nd April 2013
at Mareeba Golf Club
124 Players

President's Report

A beautiful day brought out 96 men & 28 ladies to play in our second Consistency event. The course was in good condition with the two temporary greens playing almost as well as the regular ones. The new greens look nearly ready to play on & should be an interesting challenge next time we are at Mareeba. Well done to the volunteers who have maintained the course so well pending the arrival of the new greenkeeper last week. He will have a job ahead of him preparing for the Mareeba Mitsubishi Classic on the 13/14 April, followed by the Mareeba Open on 20/21 April. If anyone is interested in playing in either of those events, contact the club for entry forms on 4092 1528.

Thanks to the new Manager Warren & his staff for looking after us & keeping everyone fed. It must have been a bit more hectic than normal, as there was a 2 day juniors coaching clinic on as well, which will be followed by an juniors Open event.   (I just wish such clinics had been available when I started 56 years ago.)

Thanks to TGT Hardware for sponsoring the day & also to Bruce Gilmour for taking on Col McDowall's jobs whilst he is swanning around down south, no doubt sampling plenty of the wines!

We are now back to playing weekly & our next game is at Mossman on 9th April sponsored by Norm Lockwood, so see you there.

Louis Siedle

PS I have a Ping Nanotech putter cover which was found on the course today which I will bring to Mossman.

Next Game Mareeba 2 Apr

All,

Our game on Tuesday is at Mareeba, is the second of our Consistency trophy rounds & is sponsored by TGT Hardware.

I'm told the course is in good condition with no surprises although some work has been done on some greens, so hopefully the weather will keep fine.

No doubt we will be well looked after as usual, so see you there.

Also, just a reminder that from this month we are back to our weekly games & in case you haven't noticed, the program is available to view by clicking on the link in the left hand column of this blog.
