RESULTS CAIRNS 4BBB TUESDAY 27 OCTOBER 2026

 

71 discerning FNQVGA golfers (57 men and 14 ladies) played the Cairns Gold Club at its best this morning in a 4BBB stableford on the Club's "15 out 19 in " course. The only problem was that your scribe only become aware of the course in play when he arrived at the "out of play " 15 hole. Oops! Sorry about that! Thanks to everybody associated with the club, in the Proshop, behind the bar and especially the green keeping staff - you all did very good.

The nominations for the Management Committee close next Monday  November 2. We are looking in articular for any members with skills in the Vice-President or general committee department, or even if you dont but are just willing to help, to come forward. It has been suggested that learning a new skill can delay the onset of dementia- by absolutely hours!

Next we we play on Monday (the day before the Melbourne Cup) at the Mossman Golf Course at beautiful Newell Beach. We tee off at 8am with a 4 Tee start.  Hot tip for the Cup, a horse trained by Chris Waller or Ciaron Maher.

ATHERTON GOLF CLUB RESULTS TUESDAY 20 OCTOBER

 A beautiful day on a beautiful golf course this morning for 46 FNQVGA golfers(43 men and some ladies) when we played a single stableford. And, most of these stayed on for the presentations which made for a convivial atmosphere in the clubhouse. 

Wasn't it good to see retiring  President Peter Clarke win the Mens Div 1 prize with a very good 41 stableford points. Peter claims the last time he won was the same year North Devil winger, Kenny Berrigan toe-poked, from the sideline, the conversion  of a Nick Geiger try just before the half time siren blew and  sent the Lang Park crowd into a frenzy. Norths went on to win 20-6. But all of  this might not be true! Peter did win, he is retiring after completing three consecutive years as president.

You will have noticed today that the One Golf platform was very slow. Nothing to do with us, but they are looking into it. However it was our fault when we presented Will Gray with the Mens Div 2 winners prize for his 35 points when it should have been Beorn Peacey who had 39 points. The error has since been corrected.

2026 AGM OF FNQVGA MAREEBA GOLF CLUB TUESDAY 17 NOVEMBER 2026

 The Annual General Meeting of the Far North Qld Veteran Golfers Assoc Inc will be held at the Mareeba Golf Club on Tuesday 17 November 2026, commencing at 8am. 

Nominations for Management Committee positions close on Monday 2 November 2026 5pm 

There will be  a 4 Tee Start, 18 Hole individual stableford for men and ladies immediately following the meeting. Please nominate by 7.30am so the match committee can do the draw by 8am.

RESULTS GORDONVALE TUESDAY 13 OCTOBER

The Golf Australia Count Back System can be a very cruel instrument at times. Just ask FNQVGA member Rich Michalski who would have been feeling pretty pleased with his efforts when he completed his stableford round at the Gordonvale Golf Club this morning along with 63 FNQVGA players ( 48 men and 15 ladies) in overcast but fine conditions. Rich would have thought his 40 stableford points would secure him a winners voucher- not so. Instead he picked a ball in the rundown!

HALF MOON BAY RESULTS TUESDAY 6 OCTOBER

 A glorious day on the Trinity Bay Coastline and a very well prepared golf course conspired to draw out some excellent scores from the 64 FNQVGA players (48 men and 16 ladies) at Yorkey's  Knob this morning.  

The ladies winner was Joy Westmore with  40 stableford points, and the Mens Div 1 winner,  with 41 points was Greg Althaus who recovered well from  not being  able to convert an 18" birdie put on the 9th. 

However, the highlight of the day was the Mens Div 2 winner Mal Meadows who, in spite of missing at least 6 very short puts, recorded 43 brilliant points. His 82 off the bat was his best gross score this decade! New smile, new swing, new result!

We had two rejoining members today which brings our membership for the year up to 199- lets see if can break the 2 ton barrier next week.

MILLA MILLAA PATRONS TROPHY RESULTS 29 SEPTEMBER

 The final round of the Patrons Trophy was played at the picturesque Millaa Millaa Golf course this morning with32 FNQVGA golfers (28 men and 4 ladies) . At 830meters above sea level  Millaa is always a challenge in club selection, add a brief shower of rain, undulating fairways and sloping greens you need to have your wits about you to score well. Thanks to Trevor and the Millaa club for making us very welcome.

The final round of the Patron's Trophy will be played at the Top of the Tablelands club Millaa Millaa on Tuesday 29  September. The Patrons Trophy is awarded to the player who achieves the best aggregate stableford score over the three qualifying rounds played on the 9 Hole Courses we visit. Innisfail, Babinda and Millaa Millaa.

HALF MOON BAY RESULTS TUESDAY 22 SEPTEMBER

 A good portion of the strong field of 70 FNQVGA players (57 men and 13 ladies) was on hand at the presentations this morning for Consistency XV. The weather was spectacular, HMB pro shop and bar  were very hospitable and the course was in great nick. Todd and Cath's Kitchen put a great finish to a very pleasurable day.

 Our sponsor today was Oak Tree Retirement Village Cairns , and we thank them for their generous support throughout the year.

We had one visitor today Bob Scott from Rich River Golf Club on the banks of the mighty Murray River at Moama.  We also had one new member today Paul Chiari from Millaa Millaa welcome Paul. With new additions and renewals our membership is up to 194!

We also had a pleasant surprise visit  from FNQVGA stalwart Russ Gill, who has been missing for a large part of the year while he has been giving  his Plastic Surgeon, Oncologist and Radiation Therapist  a fair examination of their knowledge and skills. Apparently they passed and Russ will be back to play next season.

It will be a pleasure to return to Yorkeys on 6 October  to play for Trophies sponsored by FNQVGA patron Claud Clark.

FNQVGA President Peter Clarke welcomes Tropic Vets tour leader Bill Finch to the Cairns Golf Club. 

The Cairns Golf Club hosted  FNQVGA players and a visiting contingent of 23 Tropic Vets from the Tropics Golf Club, Townsville this morning. Once the initial precipitation cleared 70 players (50 men and 20 ladies) enjoyed the early spring weather and golfers were universal in their praise of the presentation of the course. A big thank you to the Cairns Club for your hospitality.

We had one new member join today John Burns from Cairns Golf Club, which brings our membership up to 190 for the year.

Next week we travel to Half Moon Bay Golf Club for the last Consistency Round. Tee off from 7am
