PRESIDENT REPORT – GORDONVALE GOLF CLUB 04 Feb 20

Hi Members,

Firstly welcome back to all our members/new members & vistors for our first game for 2020 at Gordonvale Golf Club.

Today`s game was a single stableford event and there were 86 players today consisting of 71 men & 15 ladies. There were two new members, Ray Greig and Chris Van Eck both from Cairns GC, welcome to the FNQVGA guys. The course was a little overgrown due to the recents rains but the greens staff were out and about in an effort to reduce the rough for our visit. Many thanks to Dave (behind the bar) & Peter (carts etc) for getting us going bright and early in sensational weather which is typical in the Far North.

Our sponsor today was Stratford Painting Contractor (SPC), the owner Gordon Perry has thrown his support again behind the Vets with an even better offer than in 2019, his support to the Vets for 2020 is invaluable and much appreciated by all FNQVGA members. Remember if you need a paint job please call Gordon for a quote.

Now straight from the Teasurer to all players, it would be very much appreciated if everyone could at least attempt to bring the correct money now at registration as fees have gone up to $17 a game and correct weight would be appreciated by both Lois & Doug. Also it would be much appreciated if all members when completing their card annotate their whole golf link number on the card as these cards have to be input into the system after each game and is very time consuming when numbers are not on the cards, many thanks.

We play fortnightly now until 31 March and then resume back to weekly, please check the blog for the 2020 Program, there will be copies at registration each game for those not into techo type stuff. Our next game will be a single stableford event at Mareeba GC on the 18 Feb with Drummond Golf as the sponsor.

The Tableland Summer of Golf game next week will be at Atherton GC at 0830.

There was no ball rundown today for our first game back as every player who stayed for the presentations and did not receive a prize received a ball. This was a courtesy from John Richards the previous Secretary of Gordonvale GC who donated $60 to the FNQVGA. On behalf of those who stayed, thanks “Richo”.

First Game in 2020 - 4 Feb

Well, here we go into another decade!

Our first game for the year is a single stableford at Gordonvale, weather permitting, so watch this space for updates.  (Btw, for the benefit of potential new members or visitors, we play fortnightly until April.)

The course is a bit heavy after all this rain, but should be fine by next week if we don't get any more deluges.    Drains clear quickly now, after the clearing work done by council last year.  Greens have had quite a lot of work done on them & have just all been thatched & sanded, so should be well settled in for next week.

Our 2020 program is now posted, although we have not finalised all our sponsors, so there will be updates but dates are firm.

Looking forward to resuming on 4 Feb.  

For the benefit of visitors & prospective new members, we play fortnightly until April, after which games are weekly.

We wish all our members a very Merry Christmas & Happy 2020 when it arrives & hope they all have a safe festive season so that they arrive back refreshed, ready to lower their handicaps & walk off some of the excess weight which somehow appears at this time of year.

PRESIDENT REPORT – CAIRNS GOLF CLUB 03 Dec 19

Hi Members,

Today`s game was our final game for 2019 and was a single stableford at Cairns Golf Club, there were 112 players today consisting of 87 men & 25 ladies. The course and weather were absolutely perfect albeit it was a little bit hot but everyone reported back as a great final game.

Our sponsor today was DRUMMOND GOLF, their support to the Vets for 2019 has been invaluable and much appreciated by all FNQVGA members. Darren has already agreed to back up again as a 2020 sponsor, many thanks Darren at Drummond Golf Cairns.

The luncheon was prepared to perfection and served by Chloe, Jo & their team, excellent was the only feedback I received from our members. Well done to the staff at Cairns Golf Club for providing us with not only a great venue but a fantastic & timely lunch after the game.

Today also included the presentations to all of the 2019 trophy winners as attached to the blog last week. We had a very special guest today, Harold Gibbins who turned 100 a couple of weeks ago and was greeted by many familiar faces as well as a reporter & photographer from the Cairns Post, check out the Post this week. Harold drew some lucky raffle winners out of a hat and had a ball seated alongside an old friend and ex FNQVGA Secretary Shirley Fieldhouse as well as our Patron Claud Clarke. Harold`s own words to me were “what a fantastic day, I could not have imagined a better day”, likewise from us Harold.

A shout out to all of our sponsors, Drummond Golf, Cazaly`s, Brothers, Reef Casino, Stack-A-Pots (Al), Cape York Accounting, Stratford Painting Contractor (Gordo), HMBGC, Babinda GC (Capt Wal) and Golf World who have supported us during 2019, our members thank you all.

Finally I would like to thank our Committee who have worked tirelessly all year to provide all FNQVGA members with a weekly game at one of our “local” golf clubs, thanks team excellent job and all the best to Captain Wal who is currently working on escaping from hospital to get back to Babinda where he feels safe. Have a couple of months off team and a Merry Christmas, safe & Happy New Year to everyone.

The Tableland Summer of Golf commences next week and the first game is at Atherton GC at 0830.
