President's Report & Results Atherton 8 Aug

Today we had 70 men and 11 ladies at Atherton for a stableford event on a beautiful sunny day. The course is in perfect condition and those of you who were too lazy to get out of bed this morning were the losers.

We had visitors in Helen and Glen Masterson from Virginia, Wally Alston from Tambo Valley as well as Jo and Warren Affleck who seem to have finally succumbed to the Victorian winter and returned to the good country. We also say welcome to new members Joy Lankester, Dave Hazlett and Peter Clarke all from Atherton.

The sponsor for today is GOLF WORLD of Cairns and I thank them for the store vouchers and I hope the winners will enjoy shopping with a discount already in their hand.

Next Tuesday we play at Babinda and it would be great to see a good crowd there to justify all the work the members do to present the course in good nick for us. The following week is the first round of our championships at Mareeba and I remind members that there are qualifying requirements to become a champ. You must have been a member for at least 2 months prior to the start of the event and have played in at least 3 of our events (this can easily be checked on your GA handicap page). You are however very welcome to play for the daily prizes on offer during the 2 weeks of the championships.

Your committee in its wisdom or lack of, decided to increase the nearest the pin prizes to 2 balls instead of 1. This particularly benefits the ladies as I see that 11 girls took home 14 balls as well as vouchers.

I am not going to suggest that anyone made a pig of themselves but our lovely whiteboard scribe needed a box to get her loot to the car!!

President's Report & Results Half Moon Bay 1 Aug

Today was the third of five rounds for the Ted Thomasson Memorial Shield and was played at Half Moon Bay club in perfect conditions. The field was a disappointing 76 men and 9 ladies but we can assume that many of our members are playing the City of Cairns event being held all this week at Cairns Golf Club.

We welcomed 3 new members today in Russell Lawrence of Cairns, Shirley-Anne Pengly from Beverly Park and Jack Dempsey of Half Moon Bay. I hope you all enjoyed your first day at “vets”.

PS  It seems that more and more members are not putting their Golflink number on their cards and others just putting their last few numbers on.  This makes the Captain's job difficult & time consuming as he has no idea what club you are from.  Please ensure that you put your full Golflink number on your card.

President's Report & Results Cairns 25 July

The “golfing gods” provided another perfect day for golf and 96 men and 20 ladies turned out at Cairns Golf Club to make sure the opportunity was not wasted. The event was the first round of the Stanton Bailey Memorial Shield. This is one of our major annual prizes and is awarded to the player having the best nett score over 3 rounds including the club championships, this is the reason we played stroke today.

Next Game Cairns 25 July

Our game next week is a single stroke event at Cairns, being the first of the three rounds for the Stanton Bailey trophy, (so you will have to count all your shots instead of picking up & walking onto the next tee like all the easy games you've had so far this year)!  The other two rounds for this trophy are our Championship rounds in late August.

I'm advised the course is in excellent condition, which usually means the greens will be slick.

President's Report & Results Millaa Millaa 18 July

Today was our first trip to Millaa Millaa this season and they turned on perfect weather for us. The course is in great condition and there was no excuse for bad golf (me in particular). The welcome, as usual was warm and I thank the members for the food and coffee. Yes, I know it is an early start but many of our tableland players do it week after week with not a word of complaint.

There were 52 players in the field which was made up of 42 men and 10 ladies. The shooting was hot from the start and it looked like nearest the pin on the first was done and dusted with the first gaggle putting a couple of balls very close, but then along came Bill Miller who just knocked it in the hole for an ace. Well done Bill.
