President's Report & Results Babinda 15 Aug

Babinda failed miserably to live up to its reputation as one of the wettest towns in the country when it turned on a beautiful sunny day for us today. We had 82 players (66 men and 16 ladies) for the second round of the Patrons Trophy. 

82 players on a 9 hole course makes the round a little slow but I must say that I have come to regard vets as much as a social outing as a golf event and when we were waiting on a tee there was always fun and laughter with some of the great friends I have made through our club.

I must say that I was very remiss in my after the game speech for not properly thanking the members and helpers of the Babinda club for their efforts in making the day a success. Many will not realize that the club only have around 15 or so members and so on a day such as today it is ”all hands on deck”.  The result was a warm welcome,great food and a course that was a credit to the club.

The sponsor today was WAL ANTHONY proprietor of HERETAGE CABINETS, and also our vice captain who made two beautiful occasional tables for the winners and supplied a box of balls each for the runners up. Because there was a large field today there were 2 grades of men but as Wal himself won Div 1 the 2 prizes were enough.

President's Report & Results Atherton 8 Aug

Today we had 70 men and 11 ladies at Atherton for a stableford event on a beautiful sunny day. The course is in perfect condition and those of you who were too lazy to get out of bed this morning were the losers.

We had visitors in Helen and Glen Masterson from Virginia, Wally Alston from Tambo Valley as well as Jo and Warren Affleck who seem to have finally succumbed to the Victorian winter and returned to the good country. We also say welcome to new members Joy Lankester, Dave Hazlett and Peter Clarke all from Atherton.

The sponsor for today is GOLF WORLD of Cairns and I thank them for the store vouchers and I hope the winners will enjoy shopping with a discount already in their hand.

Next Tuesday we play at Babinda and it would be great to see a good crowd there to justify all the work the members do to present the course in good nick for us. The following week is the first round of our championships at Mareeba and I remind members that there are qualifying requirements to become a champ. You must have been a member for at least 2 months prior to the start of the event and have played in at least 3 of our events (this can easily be checked on your GA handicap page). You are however very welcome to play for the daily prizes on offer during the 2 weeks of the championships.

Your committee in its wisdom or lack of, decided to increase the nearest the pin prizes to 2 balls instead of 1. This particularly benefits the ladies as I see that 11 girls took home 14 balls as well as vouchers.

I am not going to suggest that anyone made a pig of themselves but our lovely whiteboard scribe needed a box to get her loot to the car!!

President's Report & Results Half Moon Bay 1 Aug

Today was the third of five rounds for the Ted Thomasson Memorial Shield and was played at Half Moon Bay club in perfect conditions. The field was a disappointing 76 men and 9 ladies but we can assume that many of our members are playing the City of Cairns event being held all this week at Cairns Golf Club.

We welcomed 3 new members today in Russell Lawrence of Cairns, Shirley-Anne Pengly from Beverly Park and Jack Dempsey of Half Moon Bay. I hope you all enjoyed your first day at “vets”.

President's Report & Results Cairns 25 July

The “golfing gods” provided another perfect day for golf and 96 men and 20 ladies turned out at Cairns Golf Club to make sure the opportunity was not wasted. The event was the first round of the Stanton Bailey Memorial Shield. This is one of our major annual prizes and is awarded to the player having the best nett score over 3 rounds including the club championships, this is the reason we played stroke today.

The sponsor today was DEBORAH DUFFY ESTATE AGENT and I would like to thank her for the Cairns golf club vouchers awarded to the lucky winners and runners up.
